Alarm/immobiliser

Hi, so my fuel pump issues weren’t the fuel pump!

I’ve got an electrical fault somewhere, and think it’s alarm/immobiliser related.

after playing with the alarm (see attached) the car came back to life! OBD started working and fuel pump etc. guess this is a poor connection.

Can I get rid, disconnect the alarm? I guess it’s not that simple!

Is the immobiliser and alarm one of the same thing?

Any help greatly received.

Ps when I disconnect the battery I get a very feeble alarm sound.

Do you have the separate alarm fob to unlock or the key with the three buttons? Search on the forum for EWS to re sync.

I am pretty certain all the Z3s have an oem immobilisor based on a computer chip in the key, no chip present near the lock and the ecu will not allow the engine to start.

I am not sure if the z3 could have an oem alarm AS WELL AS an immobilisor. An alarm would add security by sounding a siren if (for example) a door was opened whilst the alarm was active.

My 2000 2.8 had an aftermarket alarm fitted when I bought it, one of the first jobs I did was to uninstall it. I dont trust aftermarket alarms especially one that is 20 years old, but removal was not a job for the faint hearted. The aftermarket alarm was activated by a separate fob presumably using a RF transmitter, and was wired into the central locking system, rendering the buttons on the oem key superfluous.

Considering the car was quite new when the alarm was fitted the crude hacking into the oem harness was almost criminal. The thick wires leading into the ignition lock were crudely cut, and relatively thin wires were soldered to the two ends, wrapped in tape, and the thin wires were run back to a “black box” which was basically a box of relays activated by the fob. There were various sensors to detect movement in the cabin, movement of the car, and glass breaking etc these also had relays In the box.

All alarm wires were black, which apparently is to deter attempts to disarm it.

This may help you identify what you have, but might not!

Ok she’s playing silly buggers again! Really losing the will….

so the other day the z3 2.8 the engine started hunting and even cutting out. I thought it maybe an issue with back pressure due to a new exhaust not quite fitting properly, but today it turns out it’s the electric fault - back.

I’ve replaced, crank and cam sensors, cab valve, inlet rubber, injector seals, fuel pump and filter etc etc.

So the symptoms like last time, turns over but won’t start. On these occasions you can’t hear the fuel pump prime. I swapped the green relay and it started, then wouldn’t.

Disconnected the battery tried again, nothing. Swapped green relay again and it started. Then started fine for a few times, then cut out and wouldn’t start again (no fuel pump prime). Disconnected the battery for a few seconds, then it started. No consistent variation of the above seems to be enough to make it start.

Will have a look at Ews re-sync and probably going to buy a new green relay as well just incase.
Any ideas greatly received, and or does anyone know a garage in Wiltshire that can either get rid of the immobiliser or help find the fault. It’s so erratic it has to be electric.
