Its that annual time of year when the Zed needs a MOT. Always niggling doubt no matter how much you prepare
After celebrating its 20 year birthday a bit of a day of nervous tention, although during my 6 years of ownership only failed once on a broken rear spring!
So hopefully plain sailing, will know by lunchtime if we are good to go for another 12 months

Bad news its a fail! good news ten days to do a re test bad news they can't do it for a fortnight, second time been let down by this garage wont be a third. O/S Lower ball joint excess wear plus an advisory on a perfectly well legal tyre.

Ouch ! Your car is properly sorted. Does that mean you are allowed to drive it . . . Or not ?

If you need a lift for Saturday, I have 1 spare seat open . . .

Presumably it's still got a valid MOT?
I thought the rules had changed. A year or two ago ?

Previously when you had an mot fail, you were still allowed to drive the car on the unexpired period of the previous mot. Which allowed you time to get it fixed.

My understanding was that now when a car failed an mot then it failed the mot, full stop. Any unexpired portion of the previous mot was cancelled and null and void. So you werent even allowed to drive it home from the mot station - you had to get it fixed . . .

Which kindof makes sense. How can you drive a car on a year old test when a current test says its not roadworthy . . .

Which is why I asked the question . . . (and I've probably got it wrong)

Just for some general information regarding Mot.

Even if current mot still valid you Cant just drive around after an mot fail .
The vehicle is classified as being in an unroadworthy state.
If only major defects then can be taken home from test centre, taken to a place of repair and back to the test centre for retest should not be driven on public road bar that.
If vehicle has dangerous defects then should NOT be driven on public roads AT ALL ( at same time test station has no legal standing to keep the car they cant stop you driving away but on your head be it ) should be on a transporter.

Any valid time kind of sits in limbo till retest carried out and outstanding time added to pass if applicable.

Exactly, as Steve says. But, it was always so, just never enforced. If a car fails it is deemed no longer roadworthy and as such should not be driven on public roads.

Sorry to hear your Z didn’t pass it’s mot 🙁
But thank you for the info about not driving your car if it failed the mot 👍
About 3 weeks ago my Z passed and Alan’s passed it’s test on Monday 🌞

Simple really, if a car is unroadworthy it shouldn't be driven on the road, MOT'd or not.

I was not aware my car was "unroadworthy" drove great up to the day it went in.
Perhaps its a word of warning for all those cars 40 years old and more that no longer need an MOT
Sure some of them will have more play in a suspension bush than mine has.

Paul its a technical term the Mot test is the basic roadworthy test in the uk so if your vehicle fails an Mot then technically speaking it's unroadworthy having failed the basic roadworthy test.

Apparently not i did have a few days left but once MOT done that counteracts last years MOT so no it now has no MOT
So many different "opinions"! Let's look at the facts instead:

The current MOT is still valid until it expires. There is no argument with that.

It is illegal to drive an "unroadworthy" car on the road. There is no argument with that. However a car could fail the MOT test for a number plate bulb failure. That does not make the car unroadworthy, and if it still has a current MOT, then off you go.

@SV8Predator i know what you are saying but these days not as simple as that.
Your number plate failed that you were using as an example would then still leave you open to prosecution for driving a car on a public road with a known defect as at all times drivers are responsible for keeping their vehicles in a sound condition.
Also you would need to read your insurance policy terms about that to see if your cover would still be valid driving on the road with a failed mot test.

When we do fleet mot now pretty much all fleet companies will not let drivers remove the vehicle with a failed test as it invalidates their insurance policy terms no matter how minor the failure is.

I wanted to leave the car at the garage and have it repaired but as they couldnt do it for at least 2 weeks asked me to remove the vehicle
Its now parked up at home, will be making a small drive on Wednesday to an alternative garage then back for re test Friday.
Fortunately for me i have a good friend who has lent me his Z4 for the Doncaster Show on Saturday
