Another fun year of Z ownership. Undoubtedly the highlight was a weekend trip to Wales in April 2024. I was pleasantly surprised at how well she performed. I was also able to spend some time giving my son driving lessons in it.

I did have a few understeery moments on the Wales trip and although handling was fine over the summer, more recently she’s been tramlining quite badly, so a new set of front tyres is on the menu. They’re still hardly worn, but they’re 10 yrs old, so I’m not surprised.
I might also get the lollipop bushes done this year and I’m thinking about having the wheels refurbished. I clearly haven’t been cleaning off salt regularly enough and there’s corrosion setting in.
Another worry is the roof. The trim and stitching around the back window is starting to look a bit suspect, but maybe that can wait another year.

I only ever take mileage into account when looking at 'running costs', so thanks for that.

My wife does around 9,000 miles per year now just commuting. I keep telling her that the cost equates to 20% of her wages, but she doesn't believe me.
I am going to use your figures to show her it's actually more like 30%. Just to get there and back!

Don’t blame me for the fallout!

I also keep track of the total cost per mile since I bought the car in the event I wanted to sell, but that figure is very sensitive to how much you could sell for, so I only look at the running costs per mile now. Now that it’s pretty stable, I think I might lose interest

In any event, I can see how Z3’s and other relatively cheap but interesting cars end up being scrapped after being owned by people who can’t really afford the maintenance.

I’ve noticed a deterioration in my roof recently and last week a small crack appeared in the window. The stitching is also pulling away on one side of the window.
I briefly considered just getting a new window, but given the overall condition of the roof, it didn’t seem wise. Jack Smith’s booked for May.

Finally got round to replacing the front tyres with Pilot Sport 5’s to match the rears I got last summer. Booked in for front only alignment as well, which was out and couldn’t be adjusted on one side because the nuts were sized on and ATS don’t apply heat. Not ideal, but fe

The front tyres I had on (Toyo Proxes) have done 20k miles since I have had them. They came fitted to the rims I bought just after I got the car just over 3yrs ago and still had a healthy amount of tread despite being 10yrs old.

Are you going to find a proper garage to do your alignment? ..no point trashing that nice new rubber. 10 year old tyres will be shot however much tread there is

Needs a service next month, so will address then. It’s wasn’t that far out, but annoying.

Be worth getting new inner and outer track rods whilst they are doing it..they are cheap and make a big difference to the steering feel
