I have asked this elsewhere, but not got an answer, so hoping someone on here might know / be able to take a photo...

I have had the traditional water in boot > kill tilt sensor symptoms
however, a small issue in putting in the replacement - we don't know the colours / order for the wires into the plug...

so we have 5 wires coming from the loom
those wires need to go into the new plug we have
that plug then slots into the sensor

what colours in what order? (if anyone had a photo, even better)
and logically starting from which side of the plug also needs to be known!

so far details we have found online seem to suggest only 4 wires, but we have 5...

2001 3.0 auto convertible if that helps

many thanks

Alasdair

Can you show us a photo of what you're looking at and where it lives in the car, it might help. I have a 2000 2.0 Auto, don't know if it would be the same or not?

Thanks Tony,
not sure how easy it will be to get a photo as the car is up on a ramp!, will see what I can do...
The tilt sensor is a box (not in all Z3 cars) in a well to the left of the boot - it is a notorious problem as water can get into the boot and kill the sensor...
The loom has wires going into a plastic plug and that plug is plugged into the sensor
It is the order of the wires into the plug that I need to know...

this is a photo from Google showing the tilt sensor - it is the wire colour order we need - and as mentioned above we seem to have 5 wires, it is the order we don't know...

regards

@akirk, Alasdair, just had a look at the wiring diagram looks like the tilt sensor is called the 'Gradient Monitor' and is the box at the bottom of the diagram and the plug/socket is X1222.

And here is the colour code for the wiring.

Hope this helps, although it looks like pins 2, 4 & 5 have the same colour wires attached???

Hi Alasdair @akirk

Just had the tilt sensor out from our 2000 3.0 and wiring is as follows

The plug into the sensor green 6 pin but only 5 have wires

Looking at plug into sensor left hand is no 1 pin
pins 1,2 4,5,6 have wires no. 3 is blank and there is no pin in the module

There is also a join in the cable approx 300mm from the plug and this is how mine is connected

Pin 1 Black/red stripe joined to Black/ white stripe and yellow band.
Pin 2 Black joined to Black/ red stripe and yellow band.
Pin 4 Black/red stripe joined to Black/ red stripe and yellow band.
Pin 5 Black/red stripe joined to Black/ red stripe and yellow band.
Pin 6 Black joined to red/ yellow stripe.

Hope this helps a bit.

EDITED musn't use copy and paste changed the wire colours for pins 2 & 6

Plug pin 1 is the bottom of the pic.

Showing joint in wires.

The 3 same coloured wires look to come from the motion detectors in the car from the wiring diagram above but not sure which is which.

Hi Alex, I was just about to go into boot on my Z3.and have a look for you but had a quick look on here before going outside. I think Brian's info is what you'll need. I'll keep watching the thread. Good luck in getting the problem sorted.

looking at the wiring diagrams looks like the power should be on pin 3 not connected to pin 6. Could you please confirm what colours you ended up using and did it work.

Thank you

Hi,
Can anyone answer the question whether it worked or not.
The plug into the sensor green 6 pin but only 5 have wires

(Looking at plug into sensor left hand is no 1 pin
pins 1,2 4,5,6 have wires no. 3 is blank and there is no pin in the module)

I have the same issue as many with the tilt sensor under water and need a replacement unit and the correct wiring into the plug connector. There seems to be many different opinions on where the wires go into the connector plug. Mine also had no wire in connector 3. Mine is a 2002 3ltr sport. Please help.
