I recently took ownership of my moms 97 1.9, the car is in great condition for having 200k miles. However, I started to investigate a weak AC system I popped the hood and discovered no aux fan in front of the radiator. Further investigation revealed no engine driven fan either, but an electric fan behind the radiator. It’s very odd but the temp gauge reads good and the vehicle was ran for a long time in central Florida. I connected my ODB code reader and got some live temp data. Just idling in my driveway the temp never got above 198F (the fan didn’t turn on) and driving it around only lowered the temp with air flowing over the radiator. The manual says the aux fan should turn on at 196F. The fan does turn on when I press the AC button. It’s all just a little odd but I guess I'm not going to mess with it seeing as how the temps seem good.

Adding on to this- my mom did hit a deer many years ago and I suspect that’s when this “modification” took place. It’s never been overheated to my knowledge either!

What you describe is standard for the M44 with aircon i.e. just one fan.

That comes as quite to surprise to me. In all of the resources I’ve looked at (videos, how-to guides, the “Bentley” manual) they all show a front aux. fan and an engine driven fan (mine even has the threads where it would screw on). I mean, don’t get me wrong- I’m perfectly happy to be running the car with the cooling system as designed! Perhaps more research is needed on my end.
