Looking to renew discs and pads, for our 4 pot calipers on ours. Slotted and drilled me thinks. Any suggestions please? Cheers.

I’ve been happy with EBC slotted and dimpled discs, I’ve previously used red stuff pads which were good but have switched to yellow stuff for my ///M but can’t comment on there performance yet. Saying that I’ve recently replaced the wife’s pads on here cooper s countryman with the standards EBC pads and have been fine for her she didn’t want to shell out for the boy racer stuff😀

Personally I would never use drilled and/ or slotted discs on a road car. They are purely for 'show' and can come with downsides. A Z3, or 4, doesn't need the additional 'cooling'. They have front ventilated solid discs as standard

Drilling holes in big lumps of solid steel weakens them. They have a tendency to crack between the holes due to expansion and contraction. Seen far too many pictures of cracked drilled discs over the years to entertain the idea.
Slots and holes are also just somewhere for brake dust and detritus to gather, wearing pads quicker. Less braking performance too, as there is less metal for the pads to make contact with.

And when it comes to them 'looking good', I don't recall ever looking at another car's brakes when assessing if it is good looking.

;)

Sorry Pond but that's just nonsense.

Do you not have to inform your insurance company that you have changed the discs to drilled and grooved?

It all depends on what you are doing and your driving. Slotted and drilled are more performance based and most people never push the car that far. Quality pads made a bigger difference and especially for a street car. A good low dust pad makes day to day life much nicer.

My misses daily 2.8 Z3 was fine on standard brakes but I did upgrade it to 330i front discs and callipers because I had them laying around with EBC yellow stuff pads.

On the other hand I have pushed my car and experienced brake issued on more then one occasion after prolonged high speed hard braking. The 330i upgrade was better but still not good enough. I am now running Brembo callipers off a Porsche 992 and so far no problems.

I have heard about cracks in drilled discs online but never seen an actual failure. Every reputable brake company sells drilled discs for a reason and if there was a major problem safety equipment I think the world would know about it.
