Hi All, new to BMW but trying to learn as much as I can, bought my first bimmer 2002 Z3 M last month, last owner had taken out the bulb for engine light, long story short, after several attempts got most faults clear but stuck on P0011, I have read several posts on Vanos timing including videos by 50s kid. I have checked and rechecked everything several times but after I set my timing and then rotate 360 degrees to get back to TDC the intake camshaft looks to be advanced and the tool doesn’t fit on the back of the engine but the exhaust side looks fine. What could be wrong here??

Welcome to the forum

What engine are we talking about?
- 2000 Z3M with S54
- 2000 Z3 with M54

We will need history on repairs that have been done (or you suspect may have been done).

I've done videos on timing the camshaft for the S50B32, but the VANOS on the S54 is different to the S50, so I don't know how relevant they will be.

Yes you have the M54. Thank you for confirming that.

Check your timing jig. The 2 blanks that the VANOS cup press up to can get loose. Check that the grub screws that hold them are tight.

Lean codes usually down to air leaks after the Maf check all rubber intake boots and vacuum pipes across the engine for holes or splits. If you had the cam cover off ensure the gasket resealed ok. Smoke test the engine if you can't find any leaks visually

Thank you. Can you elaborate more on the smoke test please?

Loads of YouTube videos on smoke testing, on BMW's take the Maf off and pump the smoke down the inlet boot with throttle held open so smoke gets inside the engine, watch for signs of smoke escaping across the engine and you will find your leak if you have one.

You'll get there in the end and it will all be worth it .
Your smoke bit could be a future friend as vacuum leaks can sometimes be a problem.

Question. How do I install the hose clamp at the back? I can’t even see it!
