I don’t know if anyone has had this happen but I over torqued the splines while reinstalling the Vanos pistons. Although Beisan Systems states tighten to 8nm it still snapped the bolt so I was left with the ends of both bolts stuck inside the shaft.
I managed to work the Vanos unit free with the heads but not the ends.
Using a small round neodymium magnet (N45) attached to the end of a pair of small pliers I was able to remove the threaded ends from splined shaft by inserting it into the shaft and turning clockwise (reverse thread). It took me an hour but they did eventually come out, without needing to revert to drilling and tapping with tools that are not in my box of tricks.
It was important for the broken ends to be loose otherwise it may have needed those tools but I found this method simple and a damn sight cheaper, with less chance of metal fragments going astray.
Hope this helps.
